Apple Considers Google Gemini for AI Features on iPhone

Discover how Apple is considering Google's Gemini AI for upcoming generative AI features on iOS 18, as speculation mounts ahead of WWDC 2024. Explore the potential implications for Siri and Apple's broader AI strategy.

In an effort to enhance its virtual assistant Siri on iOS 18 with generative AI, Apple is reportedly considering announcing the integration at the upcoming WWDC 2024. A recent report from Bloomberg suggests that Apple is in talks with Google to license Gemini AI.

While Gemini currently operates as a standalone application, Bloomberg’s report indicates Apple’s interest in licensing Gemini to support a range of new iOS features based on generative AI, details of which are currently undisclosed. These features are anticipated to debut on iOS 18 later this year.

It appears that Apple is exploring all options for implementing AI in iOS 18, including the development of their own Large Language Model (LLM) named Ajax. Additionally, Apple has approached OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, considering the use of OpenAI’s more mature model over Google’s Gemini AI. However, Apple’s decision remains pending.

Further clarity on this matter may come at WWDC 2024, scheduled for June. It’s speculated that some on-device AI functions will utilize Apple’s proprietary LLM Ajax, while cloud-based AI functionalities may rely on services from OpenAI or Google. Only time will tell the final outcome.
