Samsung is contemplating extending the duration of security updates for its smartphones beyond the current 5-year timeframe

While Samsung is already recognized for its industry-leading software updates, including 4 years of major updates and 5 years of security updates for its flagship phones, a recent report suggests they are considering a further expansion of security update support.

During an interview with SamMobile at the Samsung Developer Conference, a Principal Engineer and Technical Program Manager from Samsung’s Mobile eXperience division disclosed that the company is actively exploring options to extend its long-term security support beyond the 5-year mark. This decision is aligned with Samsung’s goal of providing extended device support, and it is prompted by upcoming regulatory changes.

It’s important to note, however, that this potential extension of support does not necessarily mean that Samsung will offer major platform updates beyond 5 years. Instead, the focus is on extending security update support. This means that even if your device doesn’t receive major Android updates, it will still receive security updates for an extended period.

Samsung stands out among Android smartphone brands for its consistent software update policies, which even extend to budget-friendly devices. Currently, the company manages updates for over 1 billion devices monthly and more than 10 billion annually.

The prospect of Samsung enhancing its software update commitment is excellent news for Samsung users, as it implies that devices will remain protected against security threats for a longer period. It also underscores Samsung’s dedication to delivering the best possible support to its customers.
